United not at the races, but we must look forward to next term, says Ladies boss Bradford

FOLLOWING a crushing 7-1 defeat to Durham to bring the curtain down on the 2020/21 FA Women’s Championship season, Coventry United Ladies boss Jay Bradford says the club must quickly start rebuilding for the next campaign.

The Red and Greens were always expected to be up against it in the North East going toe-to-toe with the league’s second-placed club, and so it proved with the goal-fest that followed at Maiden Castle Sports Park.

Destiney Toussaint halved an early two-goal deficit on eight minutes, following strikes from Kathryn Hill and Molly Sharpe, before the hosts hit another gear and stormed further in front through Beth Hepple (2), Bridget Galloway, Ali Johnson and Abby Holmes.

Assessing an end-of-season encounter that failed to build on Coventry’s two successive victories prior to kick off, Bradford was understandably disheartened by the final scoreline.

“I thought we looked tired, we just let the game get away from us,” she said.

“We’ve got a few players who won’t be here next year and all in all that has played its part – we just weren’t at the races – it is a disappointing result to end the season on.

“At half-time we adjusted a few things, had some good conversations but unfortunately didn’t quite execute those things in the second half.

“But in the grand scheme of our season, we’re safe, we did what we had to do when we had to do it.

“We just need to write today off and look forward to next season.”
