Three late goals sink Coventry & North Warwickshire at Barton

THREE goals in the final quarter allowed Barton to snatch a 5-2 victory at home to Coventry who remain firmly rooted at the bottom of the Midland League Division One.

Despite making a bright start with Dom Bell scoring early on, the home side conceded three late goals as their search for a first league win this season continues.

Coventry started on the upper foot and went in front through Bell’s short corner but in a closely fought half Narton were back on level terms just ten minutes later.

The visitors were unlucky to see another short corner attempt cleared off the line while at the other end Dan Young was doing well in Adam Merrell’s absence by defending three corners.

But as the opening period came to an end the Young conceded again which gave Barton a narrow 2-1 lead at the break.

Despite being without several key players and with Jonny Leong picking up a bust nose following a melee in the Coventry area, the visitors managed to equalise through skipper Sam Clarke.

Coventry then had chances to go back in front with Ed Benfield coming close on two occasions, with the home goalkeeper saving his second chance well after being put clean through on goal.

But after being forced to drop down to 11 players, Coventry conceded from a corner to go 3-2 down.

An equaliser looked on again when Bell fired in a reverse stick screamer but the ball hit the bar to the Barton goalkeeper’s relief.

And in the final five minutes the hosts scored twice to take the win and now Coventry will have to pick themselves up if they are to go into the break off the foot of the table.

Next up they host Old Halesonians at Coventry University this Saturday.
