NEW WARWICKSHIRE Women’s tennis captain, Lianne Candappa, is feeling confident ahead of County Week (July 22 to 26).
The former international player from Warwick leads Warwickshire for the first time against Buckinghamshire on day one of County Week in Group Three at Raynes Park in London.
Candappa, now a coach, captained the 10-and-under girls county team for nearly 20 years and replaced Katie Shaw who stepped down as captain following a record 25-year stint in charge.
Candappa said: “This will be my first year as ladies captain after Katie Shaw’s successful run of 25 years, so no pressure.
“We have quite a few new names in the team and it’s ts great to have two talented juniors joining in T’Nae Paisley and Isabella Taylor, both making their senior debut.
“I remember playing county week as a junior and learning so much especially about doubles, team work and support.
“I know this will be a tough test. We have a strong box but we are feeling confident and are going to give it our best.”
Warwickshire’s squad featured a number of new names included several talented youngsters although experienced campaigners Summer Yardley, Lizzie Massey and Mary Hoggard return after impressing in last year’s County Week.
The men’s team, captained by Gavin Henderson, are eyeing promotion as they prepare for Group Two action in Roehampton.
Warwickshire claimed an unexpected promotion last year with most of the squad, including Mason Recci, Luke Hammond, Richard Partridge, Simon Ferguson, Cameron Malik, youngsters Luca Pow, Harry Lazell and Ferran Redza all returning.
Henderson said: “We’ve got a strong side and really good team spirit and everyone’s up for a real fight to get into Group One for the first time in several decades.”
