COVENTRY SPHINX’S final away game before the Christmas break ended in victory as they defeated AFC Wulfrunians 4-1.
The Sphinx travelled to Wolverhampton for their final festive game, in search of a second victory over AFC Wulfrunians after the Black Country side were knocked out of the Birmingham Senior Cup by Sphinx earlier this year.
Sphinx opened the scoring after just 20 minutes when their patient approach to the game paid off as Woodward guided a shot into the bottom corner.
It took just a minute for Sphinx to double their lead as Harkin picked up a loose ball from a corner to skip past a defender and hit a powerful shot into the roof of the net.
Though Wulfrunians looked under pressure, they did manage to peg one goal back before half time as a rare error from Towers gifted Grainger the opportunity to pounce on a simple chance – he made no mistake and slotted a shot past a stunned Dutton.
Wulfrunians’ late first half goal gave them hope as a shot from far out hit the woodwork before being cleared by the visiting side’s defensive unit.
Sphinx’s hung tough though and re-established their two goal lead just five minutes before the full time whistle when Downie hit a shot into the far post with his left foot from close range.
A fourth was then added just as the clock hit 90 when Motshweni displayed great close control of the ball to send a cross into Towers who finished from close range.
Though on paper the win may look convincing, Sphinx were made to work hard, and only the added quality at the end of the game earned Sphinx the three points.
