Coventry Editorial 21st Oct, 2021   0

WASPS have signed English duo Alex Gray and Tommy Matthews on short-term deals to bolster their depleted squad.

Gray has joined on trial having played for Bath Rugby last season and also had a stint in the NFL with Atlanta Falcons.

Outside back Gray has made 31 Premiership appearances during spells with Newcastle Falcons, London Irish and Bath.

The 30-year-old previously captained England under-20’s and had a distinguised age-grade career with the national side.

Matthews has joined on a short-term contract from Championship side Hartpury College after playing for Northampton Saints and England under-20’s last year.

Wasps head coach Lee Blackett said: “We are delighted to bring Alex and Tommy on board. They are both quality players and have already added to our group in training.

“We look forward to seeing them pull on the Black and Gold shirt for the first time over the coming weeks.”

Gray added: “I am really excited to get the opportunity to train and play with Wasps.

“I’ve enjoyed some great battles with Wasps over the years and I’m looking forward to having the Wasps players and fans on my side now.”

Mathews said: “I’d like to thank Hartpury for giving me the opportunity to join Wasps.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Wasps so far and I can’t wait to keep contributing to the Club as much as I can over the next few weeks.”

Wasps are next in action against Saracens on Sunday, October 24 with kick-off at 3pm at the StoneX Stadium.
