COVENTRY Rugby completed a league double over Caldy after securing a 49-31 bonus point victory in a high-scoring affair.
Alex Rae’s side ran in seven tries as Senitiki Nayalo and Charlie Robson both crossed twice before Chester Owen, Josh Barton and Theo Mannion all dotted down at Butts Park Arena.
The result lifts Coventry up to second in the Championship table some 13 points behind leaders Ealing Trailfinders.
Coventry made a blistering start as Robson raced in to score in the corner after good work from Dan Green and Jevaughn Warren as Tommy Mathews added the extras.
However, Caldy responded when prop Joe Sproston barged his way over the line and Lewis Barker kicked the conversion.
The home side reclaimed the lead by driving Nayalo over the line as Matthews again converted.
Caldy restored parity almost immediately when Ollie Wynn crossed following a break from Will Robinson as Barker kicked the extras.
Cov then lost Aaron Hinkley to the sin-bin and Caldy took full advantage as Robinson scooped up a bouncing ball on halfway before sprinting to the corner to score with Barker again converting.
The hosts trailed by seven points at the interval as Rae made three changes at the break in an attempt to wrestle back control of the game.
And replacement Ma’asi carried the ball deep into Caldy territory before quick hands allowed Robson to score his second try of the game as Mathews converted.
However, Caldy edged back in front as Barker kicked a penalty from right in front of the Coventry posts.
Cov hit back when Tim Hitchcock broke the line and passed to Nayalo who dotted down his second try of the game as Mathews stayed perfect from the kicking tee.
And Owen then received Billy Nairau’s clever offload to put the home side in command as Mathews kicked the extras.
Cov lost Nairu to the sin-bin soon after which allowed Caldy back in the game as Tom Sanders burst through a gap in the lineout to touch down and Barker converted.
However, Hitchcock and Nayalo combined well to set up Barton for the home side’s sixth try which Mannion converted.
And Mannion then collected Barton’s perfectly-weighted kick to score the game’s final try before converting his own score.
Coventry are next in action against Ampthill on Saturday, April 12 with kick-off at 3pm at Butts Park Arena.
