ALFIE BARBEARY scored a hat-trick of tries as Wasps booked their place in the quarter-finals of the European Challenge Cup with a 39-29 win against Biarritz.
Barbeary’s treble was added to by tries from Jacob Umaga and Dan Robson with Jimmy Gopperth adding 14 points from the kicking tee at Parc des Sports Aguiléra.
The win sets up a last eight clash away at Scottish side Edinburgh Rugby next month.
Umaga was first to cross for Wasps when he collected Malakai Fekitoa’s long pass out wide before coasting in to score.
And Wasps struck again from the restart when Charlie Atkinson broke the line before offloading for Barbeary to score underneath the posts.
Barbeary added his second try soon after with another simple score out the back of the scrum before Robson gathered Zach Kibirige’s kick to dot down his side’s fourth try of the half.
Biarritz scored their first try at the end of the first half to trail by 21 points at the break and mounted a comeback in the second period with three more unanswered tries.
However, with their lead reduced to three points, Barbeary powered his way through gap in the home defence to complete his hat-trick and ensure Wasps’ progress to the next round of the competition.
Wasps are next in action at home to Worcester Warriors on Saturday, April 23 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
