Over 2,000 people sign up for 2016 Coventry Half Marathon

AFTER a record breaking year for Coventry’s Half Marathon, ever organisers have announced that entries are now open for next year’s race which takes place on February 28, 2016.

A record breaking 3,566 runners took to the start line for this year’s event which was deemed a huge success by race organisers GO2.

And that number is expected to increase again next year with a sell-out expected as the annual race continues to gather momentum.

“We have an ambition to continue growing the event and we’re really encouraged to hear over 2,000 people have already pre-registered for the event next February,” said Coun Abdul Khan, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Events and Sport.

“We were delighted with this year’s event with over 3,000 people taking part including over 900 children signed up for the Schools Challenge, a big increase on 2014.

“The event of course not only brings thousands of people into the city to take part on the day, but it also raises the profile of Coventry as a sporting city and generates additional economic benefits to the city centre and encourages people to visit Coventry in the future.”

Organisers have confirmed that Zo?’s Place Baby Hospice will be the local charity partner.

Last year charity runners helped to raise over £100,000 for a number of good causes, a figure that looks set to be smashed in 2016.

Mick McCann, fundraising manager at Zo?’s Place Baby Hospice, added: “We are delighted to once again be the official local charity of the Coventry Half Marathon, Coventry’s greatest mass participation event.

“This prestigious event provides the charity with the opportunity to greatly enhance awareness of our work and raise funds to help us provide high quality care for babies and infants with complex medical conditions.”

The race will start and finish in the city centre once again and takes runners on a route alongside the surrounding countryside before finishing with a downhill stretch.
