OLD Coventrians kept up the pace with Midlands Three West (South) leaders Old Leamingtonians ahead of visiting Berkswell & Balsall on Saturday (2.15pm) after seeing off lowly Bedworth 38-12.
Despite going up against a visiting side with just one victory to their name, second-placed OC struggled for possession for a large proportion of the first half at Tile Hill Lane on Saturday. When they did have possession of the ball, errors and poor offloads contributed to a lack of end product.
They eventually found their feet, however, to take the lead after 18 minutes through Josh James’ sprint to the corner.
Bedworth came within inches of levelling things up but for Alex Telfer’s stunning tackle, only for the visitors to strike a few minutes later to leave the score 5-5 at half-time.
Old Coventrians raced out of the blocks in the second half to regain the lead when James scored his second try of the afternoon, with the extras this time added by Telfer.
Minutes later, a move started by Liam O’Neill from a line-out was finished off by debutant Harvey Joy for a converted score.
With 20 minutes remaining, Joy turned provider to return the favour and feed the ball to O’Neill to touch down.
OC continued to put their opponents to the sword and Elliot Sheepy’s converted effort extended the lead to 33-5.
Bedworth replied with a converted score followed by a second try of the afternoon for O’Neill.
