FOOTBALL: THE RELENTLESS match towards the Midland League Division Two title continued for Alvis Sporting on Saturday after they recorded a tenth consecutive league win away at Hampton.
Dildale Linton scored what proved to be the only goal of the game as Alvis closed the gap on leaders Droitwich Spa to four points but Damian Cassidy’s side have six games in hand on their promotion rivals.
Alvis were playing only their second league game of 2017, and with several new signings, they dominated the game from the outset.
In the first half Dildale Linton almost opened the account, producing a fine save from the Hampton keeper on 22 minutes, and two minutes later Daniel Pidgeon hit the post from close range before Michael Quirke had an angled free kick headed off the line.
After the break Linton blazed narrowly over following a goalmouth scramble, but just before the hour Alvis took the lead. Rickie Cutting on the half way line advanced, and threaded a through ball to Linton who outsped the Hampton rearguard to net from 12 yards.
“We had many chances, and hit the post twice, and should have won by a wider margin than one goal,” said Alvis boss Cassidy.
“Kiam Galdins had a fine game, and it is good to keep the winning run going.”
On Saturday Alvis return to Green Lane for the first home league game of the year when they entertain Coton Green.
