GYMNASTICS: THE world’s top gymnastics stars will head to Birmingham next year to contest the 2018 Gymnastics World Cup, and the region is already gearing up for the blockbuster competition.
Countries including USA, Russia and China will be in action in the competition, which is likely the replicate the dramatic conclusion that occurred at the Rio Olympic Games.
Team GB’s men and women face a stiff start to the contest when they face Olympic champions USA and silver medalists Russia.
Meanwhile
The USA, Russia and China will be joined by Japan, Brazil, Germany and Holland for the two-day event which takes place at the Arena Birmingham, with Ukraine also joining the men’s competition.
Karen Johnston, head coach at City of Coventry Trampoline and Gymnastics club, said: “It is going to be a real opportunity for our young gymnasts to see high-level competition on our door step – we’re planning a group visit and really looking forward to it.”
Meanwhile GB stars Joe Fraser and Dominick Cunningham believe British gymnasts have nothing to fear though when the world’s best nations descend on the West Midlands.
Fraser, who competed in his first ever World Championships in Canada said: “I’m so motivated at the moment and the World Cup is definitely something I’m looking to be a part of.
“It would be a dream come true to be part of something like that in my home city.”
Cunningham added: “It’s going to be an incredible event and every country will be in the mix.
“I think people coming to see gymnastics for the first time are going to be amazed by what they see.”
