FOOTBALL - Sky Blues surrender two-goal lead as Millwall produce stunning comeback

COVENTRY City surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 away at Millwall as Gustavo Hamer’s second-half red card proved costly.

The Sky Blues made a superb start in the capital as Kyle McFazean and Matty Godden both found the net to put City two goals ahead inside half an hour.

However, the Lions hit back either side of the break to draw level before George Saville won the game for the hosts late on at the Den.

That came after Brazilian midfielder Hamer received his marching orders for two yellow cards, the second of which came on 67 minutes with the score at 2-2.

The result means Coventry remain winless from their opening two matches of the Championship season and have dropped into the relegation zone having played a game less than all of the teams around them.

City raced out of the blocks and took the lead after just two minutes when Godden flicked on a corner from the left at the near post which was steered home by veteren centre-back McFadzean from a couple of yards out.

And the visitors doubled their lead on 28 minutes when Godden expertly guided Jake Bidwell’s cross from the left into the left corner of the goal before celebrating with a wheelbarrow supported by Fankaty Dabo.

Millwall were gifted a route back into the game on 36 minutes when Jake Cooper beat Simon Moore to a floated ball into the box and nodded home from 15-yards out with the City goalkeeper in no man’s land.

The home side equalised on 53 minutes as George Honeyman turned the ball home after Moore had superbly tipped Tyler Burey’s shot onto the post.

And influential midfielder Hamer was then sent off for a needless foul on Burey as he tried to prevent the Millwall man from bursting into the Coventry half on a counter attack.

The hosts completed an impressive comeback when Saville curled a low shot into the bottom left corner on 85 minutes with City unable to find a response.

Coventry are scheduled to face Huddersfield Town at home in their next fixture on Saturday, August 20 with kick-off at 3pm at the CBS Arena.
