FOOTBALL - Gyokeres ends goal drought to help Coventry past Stoke

Coventry Editorial 27th Jan, 2022   0

VIKTOR GYOKERES scored his first goal since October to help Coventry City edge out Stoke City 1-0 at the CBS Arena.

The Sweden international moved onto 10 goals for the season with an excellent strike from outside the box from Ben Sheaf’s pass.

It marked his first goal in over three months having netted nine goals in 11 games at the beginning of the season.

The result means Coventry sit ninth in the Sky Bet Championship table, four points outside of the play-off places with two games in-hand on sixth place Huddersfield Town.

And Sky Blues should have taken the lead when a misplaced pass fell to Gyokeres in the box only for Jack Bonham to produce an excellent save low down to his left to keep out the Swede’s powerful effort.

Mark Robins’ side then almost went ahead when Gus Hamer’s corner from the left was tipped over the bar by Bonham at full stretch.

Coventry were denied once again by the Stoke goalkeeper when he pushed away Gyokeres’ first time shot after the ball fell into the striker’s path from Jamie Allen’s dangerous cross from the right.

And the chances continued to come the Sky Blues way after the break when Jordan Shipley saw his effort superbly headed over his own crossbar by Tommy Smith from Allen’s cutback.

Coventry eventually found the breakthrough on 68 minutes when Gyokeres curled a superb effort past Bonham at his near post from 20-yards out after the Sky Blues caught the Potters in possession deep inside their own half.

The home side came close to doubling their lead when substitute Martyn Waghorn fired narrowly wide from distance as the Sky Blues ended a three-game losing run at home in the league.

Coventry are next in action away at Middlesbrough on Saturday, January 29 with kick-off at 3pm at the Riverside Stadium.
