FOOTBALL - Coventry City rescue late point against Cardiff in Frank Lampard's first game in charge

VICTOR Torp’s late penalty earned Coventry City a point in a 2-2 draw with Cardiff City in Frank Lampard’s first game in charge of the club.

Torp levelled the game two minutes from time to cancel out Alex Robertson’s strike from distance early in the second period at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

That came after Yakou Meite headed Cardiff into the lead after just four minutes only for Ephron Mason-Clark to draw City level with his first goal for the club three minutes later.

The draw means Steven Pressley remains the last Coventry manager to win his first league game in charge of the club back in March 2013.

And City have now failed to win any of the four games played since the club sacked former boss Mark Robins earlier this month.

The Sky Blues made the worst possible start as Meite headed a corner from the right into the left corner of the goal after just four minutes, unmarked from 10 yards-out.

However, Coventry responded just three minutes later when Tatsuhiro Sakamoto played a delightful ball into the path of Mason-Clark who volleyed home the first goal of the Lampard era and his first goal for the Sky Blues.

The visitors looked to reclaim the lead when City allowed David Turnbull to shoot from distance with Bradley Collins unable to hold the midfielder’s swerving effort before Meite fired wide from inside the box soon after.

Coventry went close at the other end as striker Norman Bassette saw his header at the near post kept out by Bluebirds goalkeeper Jak Alnwick following some head tennis in the Cardiff box.

Bassette spurned another headed chance two minutes before the break as his effort from Mason-Clark’s cross from the left deflected behind for a corner.

Cardiff created a chance in the first few moments of the second half as Collins parried Meite’s first time effort before grabbing hold of the loose ball.

And the Bluebirds struck just three minutes after the break when Robertson drilled a low shot into the bottom right corner from outside the penalty area.

The Sky Blues went close to a second equaliser just before the hour mark as Jack Rudoni curled a free-kick around the wall from 25-yards out which forced Alnwick to tip the ball behind.

Cardiff had a chance to stretch their lead later in the half only for Meite to a curl a free-kick well off target from the edge of the penalty area.

City responded with a chance of their own as substitute Victor Torp found Mason-Clark in space in the box as the forward curled a shot wide of the target.

The Sky Blues were almost gifted a leveller when Dimitrios Goutas headed Brandon Thomas-Asante’s cross onto the roof of his own net.

The referee awarded Coventry a penalty late on, following a long discussion with his assistant, after Calum Chambers handled Ellis Simms’ cross in the box.

And Torp stepped up to fire the penalty into the bottom left corner with two minutes left to play.

However, despite six minutes of added time, neither team could find a winner.
