COVENTRY City can no longer qualify for the play-offs after the Sky Blues were held to a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers.
City lost Liam Kitching to a red card just past the hour mark at Ewood Park but held on to come away with a point.
The result means Coventry sit ninth in the Championship table with two matches left to play.
Blackburn spurned a glorious chance to take the lead after Bradley Collins kept out Tyrhys Dolan’s initial effort only for Sammie Szmodics to inexplicably fire the rebound over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.
The home side had another chance before the break as Szmodics received the ball down the left-hand side of the penalty area and forced Collins into another smart save at his near post.
Rovers manager John Eustace received a red card after the break following a tussle with Sky Blues midfielder Kasey Palmer on the touchline.
City almost broke the deadlock soon after when captain Liam Kelly smashed an effort against the post as the ball travelled agonisingly across the face of goal and behind for a goal kick.
However, Sky Blues defender Kitching received his third red card of the season on 62 minutes when he tugged back Sam Gallagher as the striker looked to race through on goal.
The home side almost won the game late on as Dolan picked up Kelly’s loose pass before driving towards goal and firing a low effort against the base of the post from 20-yards out.
Coventry are next in action at home to Ipswich Town on Tuesday, April 30 with kick-off at 8pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
