THE next generation of rugby players in Coventry is set to benefit from further tag rugby sessions following the success of the first year of a grassroots programme for school pupils.
Engage!, which set up the ‘School 2 Club’ programme last year, has organised four weekly sessions to be hosted at Coventrians RFC starting this Friday (June 14), until Friday July 5, between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.
More than 250 primary school children have played tag rugby at Old Coventrians RFC, Trinity Guild RFC and Pinley RFC since the programme was formed in June 2018 to provide opportunities for school pupils to carry on playing sport after school hours.
The programme is also set to return to Trinity Guild and Pinley next spring.
Richard Donnelly, who works for Engage!, said that the initiative is dealing with the issue of children being inactive head on, and says the response to the sessions has been positive.
“The children have really enjoyed the rugby-themed sessions we were delivering to them at school, but then there wasn’t really anything there to encourage them to pursue the sport in their spare time, which is why we introduced the ‘School 2 Club’ initiative,” he said.
“The sessions are a place where youngsters from across the city can take part in tag rugby on a weekly basis, with the option to join the mini and junior teams at their local rugby club at Old Coventrians RFC, Coventrians RFC, Trinity Guild RFC or Pinley RFC.”
Children of primary school age can attend the sessions.
