Chelsea defender Dabo becomes latest Sky Blues signing

COVENTRY City have completed the signing of Chelsea defender Fankaty Dabo, following his release from the Premier League side.

The 23-year old will officially join the club on July 1st upon the expiry of his contract, and has signed a three-year deal with the Sky Blues.

Dabo – who operates as a right back, spent last season on loan at Eerste Divisie side Sparta Rotterdam – where he made 26 appearances during their successful promotion-winning campaign to the Eredivisie.

He spent the season before that in the Dutch top flight with Vitesse Arnhem, making 32 appearances – including five in the Europa League,

Dabo made one appearance in a Chelsea shirt in all during his time in West London, turning out for a Checkatrade Trophy game, but was unable to force his way into the first team.

Swindon Town offered him a taste of first-team football during his formative years in the 2016/17 season, where he played 15 times and scored once for the then League 1 side.

Dabo is a former England under-20 international, having also appeared at under 16 and 17 level, while his only taste of silverware to date have both come in the youth set up at Chelsea – where he was part of their Under-21 Premier League and Youth Cup successes in 2013/14.

Described as a powerful, fast defender with a knack for going forward, Robins said he is looking forward to seeing Dabo in a Sky Blues shirt next season.

“We’re delighted to welcome Fankaty to the Club,” he said.

“He is a defender with a lot of the qualities which we need in the team as we push on next season, and will be a great addition to the squad.

“He is still only 23 but has experience both in this country and abroad, including in the Europa League, and we look forward to working with him and developing his game even further.”
