BOWLS - Warwickshire Women beaten by Devon in National Johns Trophy Competition

Coventry Editorial 25th Jun, 2022   0

WARWICKSHIRE Women suffered a 122-94 defeat to Devon in the National Johns Trophy Competition at Olveston Bowling Club near Bristol.

Devon made a strong start and although Warwickshire made a comeback in the middle part of the match, their opponents eventually secured victory by 28 points.

And, adding to the drama, halfway through the game a lone bi-plane gave an air display directly overhead as the players tried to remain focused on the game in hand.

Highest winning rink for Warwickshire went to Jenny Corn (Lillington) with Aleen Shuttleworth (Stoke), Ros Taylor (Avenue Coventry) and Jacqui Ashley (Warwick Boat Club) who were evenly matched at five ends but then pulled ahead to win 20-11.

Yvonne Pick with Tracy Wheeler (both Welford), Lynne Innes (Stratford) and Elaine Taylor (Stoke) were then narrowly beaten 17-19 on the last end.

Heather Mills (Grange Ladies) with Liz Crowther (Lillington), Dawn Horne and Janice White (both RLS) were level at five before going on to lose 13-18.

Kirsty Richards (Whitnash) with Lily-Mae Adams (Sherwood Park), Anna Molony (Avenue Leamington) and Di Medhurst (Nuneaton) were beaten 12-20 despite producing a late comeback in the last few ends.

Maureen Edwards (Rugby Thornfield) with Anita Cowdrill (RLS), Pippa Mace (Lillington) and Trish Jarvis (Wolvey) were under the cosh from the outset and although they came back in the latter part of the game they were unable to turn the tables and lost 16-26.

Debbie Bloxham (Stratford) with Wendy Hobbis (Welford), Joy Cooke and Gill Maund (both Sherwood Park) started well and were only three shots adrift at the 15th end before their opponents took control to run out 16-28 winners.

The highlight of the day for County President, Debbie Bloxham (Stratford), was presenting a Johns Trophy flash to Dawn Horne (RLS) together with County Badges for Wendy Hobbis and Tracy Wheeler (both Welford) and a Colt Badge for Jacqui Ashley (Warwick Boat Club).

The club would like to thank Olveston Bowling Club for hosting the game and making them feel welcome.
