World's first urban electric air port to open in Coventry

Coventry Editorial 22nd Apr, 2022   0

THE WORLD’S first Urban electric Air Port is due to open in Coventry and residents are being urged to go along and check it out.

Air One will host electric vertical take off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Visitors will be able to take a tour between Thursday, April 28, and May 14.

The project was launched by Urban Air Port in partnership with Hyundai, Coventry City Council and the Government.

It is expected the airport will decarbonise transport while reducing congestion and air pollution, boasting just 60 per cent of the physical footprint of a traditional heliport.

A spokesperson for Urban Air Port said Coventry was selected for the project because of its geographic location in the UK and its history of transport innovation.

The tour will show exactly how the air port functions, including passenger taxi processing, command and control and the Disaster Emergency Management Security.

Visitors will also be able to see a display of the Supernal SA-1 eVTOL model and live flight demonstrations from Malloy, Skyfarer and West Midlands Police.

The police announced in February it would be linking up with the Urban Air Port to boost its crime fighting operations through the use of the force’s drones.

Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Kwasi Kwarteng, said: “Cleaner, inter-city flight technology is vital not only to reducing emissions, but to better connect remote communities.

“As we build back greener from the pandemic, initiatives like Air One will help us develop the infrastructure needed to make our dreams of flying taxis a reality.”

Tickets to see Air One are free.
