World Naked Bike Ride heading to Coventry for the first time

THE WORLD Naked Bike Ride – a global environmental and cycling advocacy protest – will be arriving in Coventry for the first time next Saturday, August 7.

The organisers said – as the birthplace of the bicycle and being famous for Lady Godiva’s own naked protest – the city is perfect.

The event is held annually in and around 15 other cities around the UK, including London, Brighton,. Manchester, York, Exeter and Cardiff.

The aim of the protest is to campaign for safer streets for all, push for more sustainable forms of transport, such as cycling, curbing car culture and ending oil dependency.

One of the organiser’s said: “The reason we ride naked is to highlight the vulnerability of cyclists on the road – there are too many near misses and serious incidents where drivers are not paying sufficient attention.

“There have been two fatal accidents involving cyclists in the Coventry area in the last 18 months, which is two too many.”

There is, however, no need for participants to go naked as the protest’s slogan is: ‘Be as bare as you dare’.

Participants can go fully clothed, in underwear or swimwear, in body paint, fancy dress or totally naked (although it is recommended riders at least keep shoes on).

“As a protest, we aim to bring a bit of fun and colour to the streets of Coventry whilst making a serious point.”
