FORMER footballers will be among those helping raise funds for Coventry’s Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice when they take part in a charity golf day.

Former England internationals Mark Chamberlain and Paul Walsh, Sky Blues goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic and former club physio Neil Sillett – who now heads up Bentley Sports Group which helps young footballers get into the game – are among the personalities participating.

Mark Chamberlain’s involvement comes after his son – Liverpool and England ace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – visited Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice’s sister site in Liverpool in 2019.

The 4 Ball Better-Ball event – rescheduled from July because of the pandemic – was organised by Coventry Golf Club to mark the 10th anniversary of Zoe’s Place in Coventry. It will now take place at 12.30pm on September 9 and organisers are hoping to beat the £6,000 raised at the inaugural event two years ago.

Warwick based Contechs and Stratford upon Avon-based Arden Foods are the main sponsors and the drinks cart is backed by the Fortec Distribution Network.

The competition will be Stableford format, based on 90 per cent handicap, with the best two scores to count on each hole.

Pete Jarvis the chairman of the Zoe’s Place Business Group and the charity’s national patron, said: “After 18 months of disruption, the business group is delighted to host its first major fundraising event since Covid which will help raise vital funds for babies and children under the care of Zoe’s Place.”

The hospice is looking to take on more nurses and care assistance for its team which provides palliative, respite and end-of-life care for children with life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses, up to their sixth birthdays.

Martin Sutliff, head PGA professional and a member of Zoe’s Place Business Group, said:

“Coventry Golf Club is excited once again to hosting such a fantastic event on behalf of Zoë’s Place, and with some great names.”

He added it would give keen golfers the chance to play at Coventry’s oldest course which back in the 1970s hosted European Tours and world class players, such as Seve Ballesteros.

Participation is £300 for a team of four. The price includes a bacon roll and coffee on arrival and a two-course dinner and prize giving ceremony for competitors at the end. There will also be an auction with prizes including a Four-Ball at the exclusive JCB Golf and Country Club in Uttoxeter.

Further sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Places are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

The 10th anniversary ball takes place on November 19.
