THE UNIVERSITY of Warwick is fourth in Europe for its teaching quality according to a leading higher education league table – while Coventry also made the top 100 on the continent.

THE (the Times Higher Education) announced their new Times Higher Education (THE) Europe Teaching Rankings 2018 on Thursday.

The ranking uses surveys, teaching data, international reputation and other statistics relating to 242 institutions across Europe to compile its table.

THE describe the table as the first international university ranking to be focused entirely on teaching and learning.

Only Oxford, Cambridge and the Sorbonne were ranked above Warwick for teaching quality while Coventry University ranks top in the UK – and third in Europe – for how well it engages with its students.

Phil Baty, editorial director of global rankings at the Times Higher Education (THE) said: “This initiative is an important world first, offering a much-needed fresh perspective on excellence in higher education.

“The University of Warwick does particularly well in our ‘outcomes’ score, for successful student progress – but also does very well in our student engagement survey, demonstrating that its students feel stretched, challenged and stimulated by their courses.”

Warwick’s vice-chancellor, professor Stuart Croft, said: “As I have said before it is not just today but every day that I hear stories and testimony of how Warwick staff and students are working together to share in Warwick’s exceptional teaching and learning experience.

“I wish once again to thank everyone who helps make teaching at Warwick an experience that is so treasured and valued. I am delighted that this ranking shows that your work is winning recognition not just in the UK, but across Europe.”

Coventry’s vice-chancellor John Latham said: “We’re a global university whose outlook is focused on engaging with our students and giving them a quality international learning experience wherever they choose to study with us, so we’re incredibly proud of the results from these continental rankings.

“It’s important to us to be representing Coventry at an international level like this, and to be attracting talented individuals from around the world to come and study at our university and contribute in the many ways that they do.

“As ever with our league table performances, it’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff. Through this ranking they’ve received an emphatic vote of confidence from our student community.”
