Victory of Warwick in annual Varsity games, stretching their winning run to 27 years

WARWICK University made it a staggering 27-0 by winning this year’s inter-university games against rivals Coventry University.

In a battle between two of Warwickshire’s finest Higher Education institutions, it was Warwick University who came out on top for the 27th consecutive year.

The inter-university games takes place every year in the Spring, with both Warwick and Coventry Universities competing against one another in more than 20 different sports including football, rugby, tennis, ice hockey and snooker.

Varsity 2017 kicked off on the table at Warwick earned hard fought victories on the pool and snooker table.




Cricket match points went to Coventry University, though Warwick hit back by winning the riding contest and women’s badminton.

Coventry University continued to apply more pressure than ever by winning ice hockey and rugby league fixtures.


However ten match wins on Friday afternoon, quickly followed by a successful run on Sunday, led Warwick University to secure a convincing 37-19 win.

Coventry University had the last laugh though, winning the rugby union contest 17-15.

Lisa Dodd-Mayne, director of sport and active communities at Warwick University said: “Off the playing fields and on them, the support across all of the clubs, societies and staff members was incredible.

“I would like to say thank you to all those who won, lost or supported over the past couple of weeks.

“Our results showed the sheer tenacity, determination and sporting talent we have here at Warwick which is incredible to see.”
