A TODDLER has died and his mum is critically ill in hospital following a collision in Coventry.

The boy and his mother had been visiting family when they were struck last night (Sunday, April 8) by a Volkswagen Bora in Stoney Stanton Road at around 9pm.

The two-year-old was taken to hospital with severe injuries but could not be revived and died a short time later.

His mother, aged 32, suffered multiple fractures and remains in a critical condition.

Three other siblings were unhurt.

The car stopped at the scene and a 39-year-old man, the driver of the vehicle, is assisting police with enquiries.

Stoney Stanton Road was closed for several hours while emergency services attended the scene and investigators probed the circumstances of the crash.

Detective sergeant Paul Hughes, from the force’s Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Some witnesses have come forward and I am grateful to everyone who has spoken to us. There was a large number of people at the scene and if anyone witnessed the collision and hasn’t yet spoken to us I would urge them to make contact.

“I would ask people at this stage not to speculate on what happened and to consider the further distress this may cause the family. They need our combined support to help them through this dreadful time.

“Specialist family liaison officers are with the family who are understandably distraught; they are being kept fully updated.”

AMBULANCE RESPONSE:

The West Midlands Ambulance Service say they were called to reports of a collision between a car and pedestrians at 9.03pm on Stoney Stanton Road in Coventry.

Four ambulances, a paramedic officer, a MERIT trauma doctor and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance Critical Care Car were sent to the scene.

A spokesman said: “On arrival, crews discovered a young boy who had suffered serious injuries in the collision.

“Ambulance crews administered specialist trauma care which continued enroute to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. However, shortly after arrival it sadly became apparent nothing could be done to save him and was confirmed deceased.

“A second patient, a woman believed to be in her 30s, was also treated for multiple injuries, including to her leg, and was taken to the same hospital in a serious condition.”
