Third person re-arrested over disappearance of Nicola Payne

Coventry Editorial 1st May, 2014 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

A THIRD person has been re-arrested on suspicion of the murder and abduction of Nicola Payne.

A 49-year-old man, who is currently on bail in connection with the inquiry, was re-arrested in the city on Friday and is currently being questioned by officers investigating Nicola’s disappearance in December 1991.

A 50-year-old man was also re-arrested on suspicion of her murder and abduction along with a 51-year-old woman who his suspected to have perverted the course of justice yesterday (Thursday 1 May).

Both were previously on bail in connection with the inquiry after originally being arrested in December 2013.

And they have been released again until the summer pending further enquiries.

The re-arrests under Sec 47 (2) of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act follow the discovery of new evidence as a result of on-going enquiries as police continue to solve the mystery surrounding her disappearance 22 years ago.

“The investigation into Nicola’s disappearance continues and today’s arrests show that there is still information held within the community that has not previously been known to the inquiry.”said DI Martin Slevin, who is leading the investigation.

“We continue to urge anyone that holds any relevant information to contact the incident room at Willenhall Police Station on 101 or call Crimestoppers in confidence 0800 555 111.

“We would remind people there is still a £10,000 reward leading to the discovery of Nicola’s whereabouts.”

Nicola was aged just 18 when she went missing from the Wood End area of the city on December 14, 1991.

She had left her boyfriend’s house in Winston Avenue to pick up some baby clothes for her seven-month-old son Owen but despite extensive enquiries, has not been seen or heard from since.

Nicola’s parents, John and Marilyn Payne, have been kept informed of the latest developments.

Teen Nicola Payne went missing in December 1991. Last year a new picture of how she might look now was released in the hope she may still be alive.
