Serial shoplifter who ignored shop ban is jailed

A THIEF who ignored a shop ban has been jailed as part of a police crackdown on business crime in Coventry.

Peter Carey had already been barred from entering all Home Bargains stores when he stole from the Cross Point store last November and December.

The 51-year-old – who had previous convictions for shop theft – was identified as the prime suspect and arrested.

At Coventry Magistrates Court, Carey, of St Georges Road, pleaded guilty to two charges of burglary and one theft and was jailed for 23 weeks.

A Coventry Police spokesperson said: “We know how frustrating shop theft is for business owners, and the wider community, and we’ll always look to identify and arrest suspects.

“We carry out regular patrols – through both visible and plain clothed officers – to monitor retail areas and respond to issues.

“We’ll continue to pursue jail terms and target those who cause harm to businesses and customers.”
