Pupils at Coventry's St Gregory's Catholic School spend week celebrating different faiths

CHILDREN at Coventry’s St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School held a week of activities to celebrate different faiths, including recreating a very colourful ancient festival.

Pupils from nursery age up to year six took part in the Faith Focus Week, learning about different religions and cultures from around the world.

Nursery and early years classes looked at cultural celebrations and festivals, years one and five explored Islam, years two and six learnt about Hinduism, year three focused on Sikhism and year four at Judaism.

The children learnt key information about the faiths also took part in creative activities around their themes, including producing artwork and exploring cultural dance and music.

The year six class even threw powder paint to recreate Holi – an ancient Hindu celebration.

The pupils also shared more about their own cultures and beliefs with their classmates.

The week culminated in an exhibition of artwork, creative writing, video, clothing, photos, artefacts and books created by the children.

Lisa Downing, RE lead at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School, said all the children thoroughly enjoyed Faith Focus Week which gave them the chance to learn more about cultural diversity both in the school and around the world.

“It was also lovely to see some of the children speak about their own faiths and share more about their first-hand experiences – they were so enthusiastic and it really helped give all of the pupils a real appreciation of their cultural heritages.”

She added all the children worked incredibly hard, produced some brilliant displays and it was excellent the whole school were involved.
