POLICE are investigating an attempted robbery in the car park outside the Odeon in St David’s Way, Nuneaton, around 6.35pm on Sunday.

The victim reported that someone approached him in the car park pretending to be a police officer, showing fake identification and demanding he be allowed to search the vehicle.

The would-be robber got into the car and attempted to drive it away but could not get it into reverse.

The victim and his friends pulled him out and he fled empty-handed, suffering a minor head injury in the process.

He demanded he be allowed to suit the vehicle.

Det Insp Gareth Unett, of Nuneaton CID, said: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may be able to help to get in touch.

“We would also be keen to speak to anyone who may have dash cam footage from the area.”

Witnesses or anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

DI Unett added: “This is obviously a concerning incident given the offender pretended to be a police officer.

“Fortunately, these types of incidents are very rare but if you do ever have any concerns about an officer’s identity they will always be happy to provide extra verification.”

Anyone concerned about whether a police officer is genuine should call 101.
