Plans to build a Lidl supermarket in Balsall Common unveiled

Coventry Editorial 4th Dec, 2021   0

GERMAN supermarket giant Lidl is looking to bring a new store to Balsall Common situated on the Kenilworth Road, where it meets Hallmeadow Road.

The site is bounded by Kenilworth Road to the west, a train track to the east, and an antiques shop and farm building to the north. Residential dwellings and a vehicle repair shop are located opposite the site while land to the west has been allocated for 230 new homes.

Lidl says its supermarket would have ‘an attractive glazed and metal panel frontage with feature brick detailing, in addition to a car parking area and high quality landscaping’.

The proposals also includes an upgrade of the existing uncontrolled crossing of Kenilworth Road to the north of Hallmeadow Road roundabout to a Toucan-style crossing.

The store, if approved, is looking to open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

Lidl says the store would normally receive a maximum of two deliveries per day and all store waste would be stored internally.

In addition it says the store would feature a ‘high quality design’, rapid electric vehicle charging points, solar panels to provide a sustainable source of energy and would create up to 40 new jobs for local people.
