Pilgrims walk 35 miles to Coventry Cathedral raising cash

PILGRIMS have arrived at Coventry Cathedral, after walking 35 miles from Leicester to raise cash.

The Pommie Pilgrims are raising money for Derbyshire church loos, kitchen and a warm space by walking to all 42 Anglican Cathedrals.

Corrinne and Jo arrived at the city’s cathedral with a warm welcome from Canon Nitano Miller.

All Saints Church in the Peak District village of Youlgrave is a Grade One listed building built in 1155, and lacks some key facilities.

The group plan to raise a total of £42,000 towards the renovations.

Rev Canon Jane Clay, chair of the Pommie Pilgrimage organising group said: “Our hope to connect Youlgrave with each Cathedral in the country via pilgrimage is a huge challenge and feels like an impossible task, but one step at a time, together, we’ll get there.

“We’re not expecting to raise this amount of money by being sponsored a penny a mile, but if you’re able to spend more than a penny for our loos, please do get in touch.”

Corrinne Barnes added: “Having moved to beautiful Youlgrave from the Channel Islands 4 years ago, and being a very keen hiker, the Pommie Pilgrimage seemed like the ideal opportunity to give something back to my ‘new’ home.

“When first considering which leg to do, Leicester to Coventry seemed the most practical, as my son lives in Leicestershire and would be well placed to act as support team/dog minder.

“On further reflection, it seemed even more appropriate as my maternal grandmother was born in Leicester and grew up in Hinckley.

“I had never visited either Leicester or Coventry Cathedral and so this seemed like the perfect opportunity to see both…even if it meant I would need to walk from one to the other to do so.”
