Noise enforcement teams making a real difference, during the challenges of COVID

Coventry Editorial 1st Nov, 2021   0

THE Council’s noise enforcement team have been hard at work over the last year and a half providing solutions for people affected by the nuisance of noise.

Unwanted and anti-social noise can cause terrible problems for people affecting mental health, causing stress and lack of sleep – all of which can lead to serious health issues.

Between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2021 the team has been out and about responding to more than 3,200 complaints helping concerned parties collect data and information to help address the issues so a speedy solution can be found.

The team always aim to achieve a solution without the need for any enforcement measures, however they will use all measures available at their disposal to gain a quick solution including prosecution as a last resort.

In the past year, including during the lockdown periods, almost 350 noise abatement notices were served, and 40 prosecutions carried out.

Councillor Abdul Salam Khan, deputy leader at the Council and cabinet member responsible for community safety, said: “No one wants their lives blighted by unwanted noise and if no other solution can be found the noise enforcement team have proved they can help to stop excessive noise having an impact on people, even during the very difficult times of the last year or so.

“We want residents to be thoughtful and more aware of the issues they may cause to those around them with loud music, and anti-social behaviour.

“We have also shown that if we need to, we are not afraid to prosecute, and my thanks go to the team for all their hard work making people’s live better.”

The noise enforcement team recently dealt with a persistent offender, who had repeatedly breached a noise abatement notice and continued to play loud music which was impacting on several other neighbours.

As a result, the team obtained a court warrant and confiscated the offender’s stereo and other associated audio equipment.

The offender was successfully prosecuted in court for the offences.
