New poetry and the spoken word festival coming to Coventry

Coventry Editorial 3rd May, 2022   0

THE ORGANISERS of a brand new three-day festival celebrating poetry and the spoken word in Coventry have announced their first two acts.

The Skylines Festival will run between July 15 and 17 and feature household names, established writers and brand new poets.

There will also be poetry walks, workshops and performances to fill the streets.

The event is funded by Arts Council England and was the brainchild of Writing West Midlands and Nine Arches Press after the 2021 BBC Contains Strong Language Festival proved a huge success.

SkyLines will be fully accessible, with options to both participate in and watch the festival online.

On July 15, Sunday Times bestselling author Hollie McNish will make an appearance as part of her Slug tour to perform poems about motherhood and friendship.

She’ll be joined by Michael Pedersen, who will be reading from ‘Boy Friends’, his poetic memoir about friendship which was described by Stephen Fry as ‘enchanting…astonishingly compelling…rare and to be treasured’.

BBC Radio 4 favourite John Hegley will be wrapping up the festival on the Sunday with a combination of poems, drawings songs and dancing.

John will perform some newly-composed pieces around John Keats’ letters and leisure activities, as well as some from his extensive back catalogue.

Both performances will take place at the Belgrade Theatre from 8pm, with tickets costing £15 each.

Hollie and John will hold book signings after their performances.

The full programme for the festival will be announced by the end of May 2022.
