New bridge spanning the A45 near Coventry is 'safer for pedestrians and cyclists'

THIS is the new bridge spanning the A45 near Coventry which has opened for the first time after its original outdated structure was removed and a new one installed to give pedestrians and cyclists safer journeys.

The steel bridge, across the A45 westbound entry slip at the A45/A46 Festival Interchange, also provides better access for people with disabilities.

It also raises the headroom under the bridge and is 3.5metres wider across which gives cyclists and pedestrians the chance to use the footpath together more comfortably.

The bridge was transported to the site as an abnormal load from Kent in two parts which could then be lowered into place onto the concrete abutments late last year.

The 48.5metre long bridge was carried across the carriageway and lowered into place

National Highways project manager Patricia Dray said: “The previous footbridge did not meet modern standards.

“This new bridge is more spacious and safer, it will need less maintenance and will benefit the local community for many years to come.

“We appreciate that any works can cause disruption and are grateful to people for their patience while we have been carrying out this important work.”

After the bridge was lowered into place, extensive work was carried out on the surrounding footpaths, tackling overgrown vegetation and extending a retaining wall.

Finishing works took place last week and the bridge was opened to the general public on Saturday.
