MUSIC MATTERS: Ska-tree joins the Christmas trail

Christmas Tree Trail

The lovely people at West Orchards in Coventry city centre have allocated the Coventry Music Museum/2-Tone Village a wonderful tree as part of their Christmas Tree Trail that gives local community groups a chance to showcase their projects to the thousands of shoppers who use the mall.

Our 2-Tone ‘Ska-Tree’ is located outside of Thornton’s on street level and it’s there until December 31. We are asking everyone to take a selfie in front of our tree, and send them to me at [email protected]. Pete can also be found on Twitter @PeteChambersCov

Roadies, Rock and Record Reads

Central Library in Coventry city centre is celebrating local music, and it’s little wonder given that its walls have witnessed the sounds of The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zepplin, Chuck Berry, Pink Floyd, The Selecter and the Specials to name just a few.

The exoskeleton that now houses Central Library was once the walls of the iconic Locarno or Tiffany’s or simply ‘The Rockhouse’.

The library has put together some great titles to celebrate the history of music, including Ruth Cherrington’s ‘The Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1970’s Coventry’ and Daniel Rachel’s ‘Walls Come Tumbling Down’, the music and politics of rock against racism, 2 Tone and Red Wedge alongside fiction titles including Iain Banks’ ‘Espedair Street’ and Kevin Sampson’s ‘Powder’.

Also on the list are Louise Wener’s ‘Different for Girls’ and Gareth Murphy’s ‘Cowboys and Indies’. All of the above books are available to reserve through their online catalogue.

Danni Virgo

Danny Virgo, remember that name.

Based in the West Midlands, they are an alternate rock/acoustic duo fronted by singer/songwriter Danni and Willow, instrumentalist/songwriter.

‘Wonderland’ is powerful as you like with contemporary vocal styles, it’s a joyous sound that they make. If there is any justice in the world, then Danny Virgo deserve to make it really big, with all the elements combining here that make a great band. Just a bit of luck could give this great duo the exposure they deserve.

They formed at a music college in Birmingham. This has led to many gig opportunities at O2 Academy 3, Sunflower Lounge and The Night Owl and other venues.

Their debut single ‘Wonderland’ was released on November 10 and was recently played on local radio.

Over the summer they performed at venues such as Lunar Festival and now that their single ‘Wonderland’ is out, they are looking to share their latest songs with more gigs.
