COVENTRY city centre came to a standstill last night (Tuesday, December 3) after armed police descended on Broadgate in response to allegations of a man shooting a gun out of a flat window.

West Midlands Police have arrested a man in his twenties on suspicion of the possession of an imitation firearm.

Coventry Police reported on Twitter at 7.05pm that they were responding to a live incident: “We’re dealing with an incident in #Broadgate, #Coventry city centre. Reports of a man discharging a firearm from a flat window. Casings recovered suggest it’s a blank firing pistol. Armed police on scene. No injuries reported. Cordons in place. More to follow.”

Broadgate was cordoned off and evacuated during the incident. Police say there were no reported injuries.

In a later tweet at 9.33pm Coventry Police posted an update on the arrest and thanked all members of the public for their patience.

“#UPDATE| We have arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm. Thankfully, there are no reported injuries. Thanks to all members of the public for their patience tonight.”
