Local polling to go ahead in Coventry despite Coronavirus halt to council elections

A BY-ELECTION to vote in a councillor for Upper Stoke is set to go ahead this week, Coventry Council has said.

The ballot comes following the death of former city mayor Sucha Singh Bains last year.

Despite local elections being cancelled in May due to the spread of Coronavirus, the ward vote has not been changed.

A spokeswoman for Coventry City council said: “The Upper Stoke by-election in Coventry this Thursday (March 19) will take place as planned.

“Extra precautions will be taken such as additional cleaning of the polling stations and hand sanitiser being made available on the day.

“Electors can also use their own pen or pencil to mark the ballot paper if they wish.

“On Friday, the Government announced that Local, Combined Authority Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner elections that were due to take place on 7 May this year have been postponed until May 2021.

” The Upper Stoke by-election will go-ahead as last week’s announcement does not cover by-elections. Legislation is now needed to formally postpone the elections for 12 months. We will provide more details once information becomes clearer.”

The nominations for the ballot are Chrissie Brown (Green Party), Gurdev Singh Hayre (Labour), Jane Nellist (Socialist Alternative), and Gurdeep Singh Sohal (Conservatives).
