Lineup announced for Coventry's poetry and spoken word festival

Coventry Editorial 11th Jun, 2022   0

THE full lineup has been revealed for SkyLines, a spoken word and poetry festival coming to Coventry in July.

Over 20 events will take place across the month, with the main festival taking place between July 15 and July 17.

SkyLines will feature a mix of household names, established writers and brand new poets.

Before the main festival gets underway, there will be an open mic night at Cafe Morso on July 14 with special guest Mark Grist.

The packed programme includes two networking events, with the first one taking place on July 15 from 1pm at Coventry Central Library where Coventry Poet Laureate Emilie Lauren Jones and Young Poet Laureate Hawwa Hussain will share some of their favourite works.

The majority of the festival will take place at the Belgrade Theatre, with Friday evening’s performance coming from Sunday Times bestselling author Hollie McNish who will be joined by Michael Pedersen at 8pm to read funny and reflective poems about friendship and motherhood.

Hollie’s performance will be one of five in-person events at Belgrade Theatre to be British Sign Language interpreted.

Hawthornden Prize for Literature winner John McCullough will be holding an in-person workshop on ‘risks and reboots’ on July 17, with the same class available online five days earlier.

John’s talks will be two of seven online and in-person workshops to take place over three weeks, with classes including delving into how to borrow voices from plants and animals in your work and exploring how to perform poetry.

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust will be hosting two digital poetry trails along the River Sherbourne at 11am on July 15 and 17, with the first walk featuring spoken word artist and rapper John Bernard and the second including multilingual poet Sujana Crawford.

And if you can’t come in person, all live poetry events from the Belgrade’s B2 auditorium will be live-streamed.

SkyLines is an Arts Council England funded event that was created following the success of last years BBC Contains Strong Language Festival to develop and support live poetry in Coventry.
