A man has been jailed for 25 years after knife attack on two good samaritans.
The jail term with a five-year licence extension at Warwick Crown Court comes after he was found guilty of attempted murder of a good samaritan.
On July 16 last year, Gary Jones, aged 27, was drinking with friends in a house on Whitmore Park Road, Coventry.
During the course of the evening, he had consumed a large amount of alcohol, said the Crown Prosecution Service.
Two of the occupants in the house had an argument and one of them left in a distressed state.
The two victims had been walking home following a night out, and had seen an upset young woman on the road wearing her pyjamas.
They had gone to comfort her. They escorted her back to the house and knocked on the front door. The door was opened by the young woman’s mother.
The defendant ran out of the property carrying a large kitchen knife.
The female victim tried to calm the defendant down and tried to get the knife but the defendant lashed out and stabbed her to the face.
When her male friend came to her aid he has been stabbed a number of times by the defendant to the neck, back and head.
On hearing the victims’ screams, neighbours called the emergency services and the victims were taken to the hospital.
The defendant fled the scene of the attack, but later handed himself into the police and later pleaded guilty to offences of wounding with intent, having an article with a blade but pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.
He was found guilty of attempted murder of the male victim.
Paul Reid, District Crown Prosecutor from West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service, said: “This was an unprovoked and violent attack on two members of the public who had tried to help a young female who was distressed. The two victims have been left with life changing injuries.
“He will now have to deal with the consequences of his cruel actions.”
