STUDENTS from Coventry’s Lyng Hall School have won an Apps for Good award which celebrates creativity and ingenuity.

They took the top title in the Digital Explorers category which showcases the best app ideas from younger students and is supported by Lego.

Their winning app ‘Slides’ encourages children and adults to read, incentivising progress by unlocking the next stage of a game every time you read.

One of the students Ellie said: “I am grateful for this experience Lego has created as an opportunity for people to create amazing apps.

“I have a feeling this will be a life changing moment that will greatly affect my decisions for the future when I continue to develop the app.

“It’s astonishing what your ideas can lead to.”

Lyng Hall School teacher Zainul Ahbedin was also awarded ‘Teacher of the Year’ by Apps for Good.

Zainul delivered an Apps for Good course to his students for the first time this year after reading about the scheme in a blog.

In his winning citation Apps for Good said: “Zainul has been a delight to work with, always supporting us with adhoc requests and has delivered the course so well, that he has ended up with a finalist team in this years’ awards.”

Apps for Good is an education technology charity with a mission to grow the next generation of digital social leaders.

Through innovative learning programmes, it aims to unlock the confidence and talent of young people to help them thrive in a tech-driven future.

The awards challenge young people to design apps to address issues affecting their communities or the wider world.

The awards are supported by Spotify, Deutsche Bank and Lego.
