Independent family interiors business in Coventry is closing after 50 years

AN independent family antiques business and home interiors store in Coventry is closing after 50 years.

Green’s Home & Garden on Rugby Road in Binley Woods has announced the shutdown next month.

It says it is due to a ‘”steady decline and change in traditional retail”.

Many UK retailers face rapidly changing shopping habits, a rise in online shopping and declining footfall. 2019 saw the closure of 16,073 stores, according to The Centre for Retail Research in Newark.

Two other business on the same site, Paul Edwards Interiors and The Barn Kitchen, will be continue to trade as normal.

A full statement on the antique centre and cafe’s website says: “It is with heavy hearts that we must announce/confirm that Green’s Home & Garden will be closing at the end of April 2020.

“The steady decline and changes in traditional retail have unfortunately taken their toll and so as a business, we have decided that closing Green’s is our only option.

“Many of you know that Green’s is a family business and has been trading for over 50 years, initially as antiques dealers and latterly as a home, garden and lifestyle destination.

“We have been proud to stock a vast range of wonderful and eclectic products on behalf of dozens of independent traders and so this really is the end of an era.

“We would like to thank all our customers, especially those who have returned time and again over the years, for your custom, loyalty and support.

“You will of course see lots of reductions and stock clearances in store over the next few weeks. We hope to see you soon and on behalf of all the staff and traders, we wish you the very best for the future.”

Green’s Home & Garden first opened in 1969 when Harry and Dot Green began trading as Barn Antiques.

Motorists driving passed on the A46 may be familiar with the sight of imitation towering wooden giraffes and other replica animals peering over the fence.

Green’s stocks home interiors including indoor and outdoor furniture, lighting, accessories and quirky one-off pieces on behalf of 40 specialist traders.
