Improvement work starts at Warwick Racecourse

WORK to redevelop St Mary’s Lands has begun.

Improvements started with resurfacing to the racecourse’s service road in a bid to improve access for maintenance and emergency service vehicles.

This will be followed with alterations to the canter-down in front of the Grandstand. The track will be re-laid with a multi-use surface which will make the 2.5km track more accessible to those in wheelchairs or with pushchairs and will be open for the public to use for walking, cycling and running.

A cycle link will also be created to connect the canter-down to Hampton Road.

Work is set to be completed by September.

Warwick District Council spokesman for business, Coun Noel Butler said: “After many years of planning it’s great to see the St Mary’s Lands Working Party masterplan of improvements taking shape opening up these wonderful facilities and open spaces for everyone to enjoy.”

The St Mary’s Lands Working Party is made up of the Corp of Drums, Friends of St Mary’s Lands, Golf Centre, Hill Close Gardens, Warwick Racecourse, Racing Club Warwick Football Club, Warwick Town Council, Warwickshire County Council and the Warwick Society.

The masterplan also includes improvements to footpaths and parking; a new play area next to the Forbes estate; and public toilet facilities at both the golf club and Racing Club Warwick, and improved drainage and flood defences.

The inclusion of a hotel was also endorsed as part of the plans following a feasibility study on the economic benefits it could bring to the town.
