A HORSE needed rescuing after cooling off in a canal in Coventry last night.

A Foleshill Fire Station crew and a specialist rescue team were sent to Oxford canal in the Alderman’s Green area of the city.

The horse was rescued efficiently without causing any injuries.

A video on Twitter shows firemen hoisting the horse out of the canal – where it had been stuck for more than an hour.

The horse had made a burst from a local farm and had taken a dip in the stretch of canal between Greyhound Inn and the Old Crown pub.

Its owner and police were in attendance during the rescue effort until support was sought from the fire team.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson said a vet was called and slings, strops and lines were used to gently guide the animal over the the edge of the canal to elevate it out.

He said they were called at 5.28pm and took till 6.34pm to complete the operation.

The WMFS Twitter account said: “A horse is rescued after taking a dip in the canal to cool off. The horse is now happy grazing in a field. Thanks to crews from Foleshill Fire Station and our Technical Rescue Team.”
