Giant poppies added to Coventry's roads ahead of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day

A NUMBER of giant Remembrance poppies have been put on Coventry’s roads in the run up to Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

The poppies will be painted on main routes into the city centre close to the Ring Road, near the War Memorial Park, the Council House and at the iconic Coventry Cathedral.

The design features the famous red poppy with the words ‘Lest we forget’ alongside it.

Coun Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: “As a city of peace and reconciliation, we have been determined that although we cannot meet in person to attend our traditional memorial service, we will not forget the sacrifices made during conflicts around the world.”

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and November 14 marks 80 years since the Blitz that devastated the city.

Coun Hetherton added: “These poppies are an innovative way of marking Remembrance Day during the coronavirus pandemic and we hope they serve as a poignant reminder to people who pass them that we will always remember and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in war.”

The poppies will be installed over the next few days alongside an image that will also be displayed on the city’s variable message signs around the ring road.

Coventry’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations will be streamed online as the city acts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 with people asked to mark the occasion at home.

The stream will be broadcast this Sunday (November 8) at 10.50am on BBC CWR and online via the Council’s and BBC CWR website.
