Former Coventry striker's testimonial taking place tomorrow

Coventry Editorial 24th Jun, 2022   0

FORMER Coventry City and West Brom striker Lee Hughes will be having his own testimonial, dubbed ‘The Final Whistle’ at the Trico in Redditch on Saturday.

The game will kick off at 2pm and will see a West Brom 11 take on a Midland’s team, with the Premier League’s record appearance holder Gareth Barry among the biggest names to feature.

Also on the list is former Fulham and Hull City star Jimmy Bullard and ex Baggies striker Peter Odemwingie.

Hughes first made his debut for Kidderminster Harriers in 1994 and starred for West Bromwich Albion, where he had two spells between 1997 and 2001 and 2002 until 2004.

In between those two stints Hughes sandwiched in a season with Coventry City, and spent time in the lower leagues before becoming Worcester City player manager in 2017.

Despite never playing for Redditch, Lee said he chosen The Trico because he played in the Midlands for his whole career and his son plays for the clubs under 10 side.

Speaking on the clubs Reds Radio podcast, Lee added: “It will be great for my son to see me play one last time and hopefully if we can get him on the pitch for the last few minutes that would be amazing.”

Tickets for the game are £10 each, with under 18’s getting in for £5.
