A COVENTRY student has won a prestigious title at Royal Leamington Spa College, writes Oscar Bland.

Sophie Duckett, who is 18 and from Walsgrave, was named ‘Early Years Student of the Year’ and is on course to return to the college to continue her studies.

Sophie, who hopes to become an early years practitioner, had work placements in many primary schools and is planning on studying a Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Early Years at the college in September.

Sophie said: “I was so shocked – I still didn’t realise it was me, even when they were reading out my citation.

“I’ve always wanted to work with children and love the idea of teaching them too.

“I’d like to thank my tutors for their support – I wouldn’t be where I am now without them.”

Roaslyn Lambert, the early years’ head of department, added: “Sophie is reliable, committed, personable and above all, produces the highest quality of work.

“She has an outstanding attitude and is continually seeking to grow her knowledge and experience.”

Roger Bevan, Director of the College, said Sophie was a deserving winner and he looked forward to welcoming her back in the new academic year.”
