SIX Coventry sports clubs have raised more than £35,000 to help local children from disadvantaged backgrounds access sports in the city.

It comes as Coventry City of Sport Challenge has come to end, and the winners have been revealed.

European City of Sport joined forces with Free Radio’s Cash for Kids charity, Coventry City Council, CV Life and CV Life Engage! to bring a unique fundraising challenge to the city.

Six clubs and groups from Coventry were chosen to take part in the challenge last October – Tribe Coventry, City of Coventry Swimming Club, Diamond Dance, Infinity Trampoline Club, Coventrians Football Club and Earlsdon Highway Netball Club.

They were each given fundraising and marketing advice and a target of £2,000 to raise between November 4 and December 1, with many prizes to be awarded.

All six clubs successfully raised raised £35,967 between them, hitting their individual £2,000 target and each received an additional £500 in top-up funding.

Coventrians Football Club, raised the largest amount, £12,278.50, and claimed the winner’s prize of £1,000, they also won a £250 prize for the most social media engagements. Tribe Coventry won the £250 prize for the most creative fundraising idea and Earlsdon Highway Netball Club won £1,000 worth of sportswear vouchers for the most community engagement.

Dave Moorcroft, Chair of European City of Sport and Executive Director of CV Life, said: “I am so pleased we have been able to work with Free Radio’s Cash for Kids Charity on this challenge. It’s been great seeing how the clubs have gone about fundraising, some of the ideas have been fantastic. The grand total of over £30,000 is absolutely amazing. With a target of £2,000 they have all blown us away with their efforts.

“It’s such a great thing for Coventry to have had the opportunity to help host this during our year as City of Sport.”

And John Dalziel, presenter of Hits at Breakfast on Free Radio added: “We’ve been overwhelmed by how well the clubs taking part in our first Sports Challenge have done. It’s been amazing to watch what they’ve been up to on social media and I can’t wait to see how all the money raised will now be used to get more Coventry kids involved in sport.

“This has been the perfect way for us to be a part of the Coventry European City of Sport and I’m really proud with how our city has embraced this Challenge.”

Jane Connolly, Secretary for Coventrians Football Club said: “We’re so pleased to have taken part in the Coventry City of Sports Challenge and have had such fun over the month.

“We’ve loved that all of the different sections pulled together to help each other and as you can see the results were phenomenal!

“Our mission was to make the challenge affordable for all so that members could all feel that they had taken part whether they contributed 20p or £200.”

On the day results were announced, members from the six clubs enjoyed trying out a new range of sports including table tennis and badminton.
