THE MP for Coventry South Zarah Sultana paid tribute to the ‘unrivalled’ councillor John Mutton in the House of Commons yesterday.

Coun Mutton sadly passed away earlier this month just days after being re-elected for another term in Binley and Willenhall.

He was a Coventry City Councillor for almost 40 years.

Ms Sultana said: “When I was elected as one of the youngest MPs two-and-a half years ago, I had fantastic support from more experienced local councillors and activists in Coventry and none more so than from councillor John Mutton.”

She paid tribute to him for ‘putting his anti-austerity principles into practice” during his time as leader of the council between 2010 and 2013, ‘defending local services from government cuts’.

“Perhaps his proudest achievement was championing the International Children’s Games, winning him international respect, and which he helped to bring back to Coventry this August.”

In response, the Leader of the House of Commons, Mark Spencer MP, said he was ‘delighted to join her in paying tribute to John’ and that she had done ‘an excellent job in paying tribute to him’.

Coun Mutton is survived by his wonderful wife, Mal, two sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren.

Ms Sultana said he had left ‘an unrivalled legacy in Coventry’.
