A POST-GRADUATE from Coventry has received an award to enable her to study at an international university.

Charlotte Miller was awarded the All-disciplines Post-graduate Fulbright prize – gaining her a place on one of the ‘most well-regarded’ scholarship programmes at Boston University.

As a result, she has been selected to complete a Master’s in public health – specialising in women’s and children’s health, as she explores the issues of gender-based violence and child sexual exploitation.

Commenting on her award, she said: “I am extremely delighted to have been given this incredible opportunity to become a Fulbright Scholar.

“The award will enable me to collaborate alongside grassroot organisations to understand how and why gendered-based violence exists and create educational projects to eliminate this violence.

“I hope this work will allow me to empower women and children in my local community and abroad to understand and fight for their right to be free from all forms of violence.”

Charlotte will celebrate her success along with 44 other British grantees at a reception hosted by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office on Thursday, July 6.

Penny Egan CBE, executive director of US-UK Fulbright Commission, said: “The impact of the Fulbright programme can change the world.

“Our Fulbrighters will return to the UK having been exposed to different cultures, value systems and schools of thought.

“They will have the capacity to be more empathetic global citizens and be better prepared for collaboration across borders, between the US and the UK, and beyond.”

Amy Moore, director of the Fulbright Awards Programme, added: “As Fulbright alumni and future leaders, they will be able to foster personal and professional connections between nations.”

The Fulbright Commission selects scholars through a rigorous application and interview process – looking for academic excellence, a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to give back to the UK upon returning.

Typical grants include a maintenance allowance and/or a contribution towards tuition fees.

Scholars also receive administrative support and a cultural education programme, which includes a comprehensive pre-departure orientation, enrichment opportunities in the USA, a re-entry session and access to a global alumni network.

On returning to the UK, Charlotte wishes to use her experiences from the scheme to become a gender policy advisor on violence against women and children and to implement national educational programmes to combat the issue.
