CITY residents are being reminded by police to lock away their valuables and ensure no items are on display following a rise in vehicle crime.
The reminder follows a number of incidents involving vehicle crime particularly in the south of the city.
As a result, drivers are being warned to be extra vigilant and double check when locking their car doors as well as not leaving any amounts of money in clear vision.
Sergeant Johanna Comer from Coventry Police said: “There are a variety of offending tactics with some attacking secure vans and stealing tools which represent family livelihoods – we do not underestimate the impact of this.
“Local officers are being deployed in the area in plain clothes in hot spot areas in order to catch thieves.
“However we are aware there are also opportunistic thieves roaming the area and trying car door handles looking for insecure vehicles.”
Coventry Police has offered the following advice to vehicle users to combat car thiefs.
1. Ensure your vehicle is locked, even if the vehicle has been locked with a key fob – double check.
2. Do not leave anything on display in your vehicle, not even small amounts of loose change.
3. Do not leave your satnav or mobile phone holders stuck to the windscreen – it makes offenders think there may be something of value left in the vehicle.
Segeant Comer added: “Please share this message with all of your local contacts and ask them to speak to their friends and neighbours about this.”
If you see anything suspicious or believe a crime is in action contact the police immediately on 999, if you have something else to tell us dial 101.
