A DETERMINED woman is gearing up for the Lake District Ultra Challenge, a 100km walk taking place over June 8 and 9 to raise money for her Coventry niece achieve her dream of walking.
Effie Middleton, has triplegic cerebral palsy, a condition that affects her lower limbs and upper left limb, making it impossible for her to walk or stand alone.
This condition also impacts other areas of her health, including blood circulation, digestion, and sleep.
In the past, Effie benefited from using an Innowalk – a motorized device that allowed her to experience the sensation of walking – helping her build muscle strength and improve overall health.
Inspired by the positive impact, Effie’s mother, Ellena, aims to raise £33,000 to purchase an Innowalk for Effie to use permanently.
Hannah was inspired by her sister Ellena, who completed a similar event in London last year to raise money for Effie’s Innowalk.
With about £8,000 still needed to reach their goal, Hannah hopes to contribute at least £1,000 through her efforts in the Ultra Challenge.
Ellena said: “Effie adored the Innowalk – I could barely get her out of it.
“It works a little like a motorized cross-trainer. If she had one of her own, it would significantly improve her muscle strength, flexibility, and independence, along with all the other health benefits that come with being able to stand and move upright.”
The family’s fundraising efforts are supported by the children’s charity Tree of Hope, which assists families in raising funds for children with healthcare needs not met by the NHS.
The charity also provides benefits such as gift aid, corporate support, and donor reassurance.
Becky Andrew, Tree of Hope CEO said: “We wish Hannah all the best with her impressive challenge and the family with their ongoing fundraising for Effie, and are here to help however we can.”
